Last week's stunning victory by the PTI in Punjab by-elections over the seats of dismissed means that both Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Noon (PMLN), the two main major parties of Punjab , are currently and politically in a heated race for the Chief Minister-ship, with their respective candidates being Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, a candidate of the PTI, and Hamza Sharif, a candidate of the PDM.

As a result of the shifting political heat in the province of Punjab, Pervez Elahi is currently the leading contender to succeed Hamza Shahbaz Sharif after by Election of Punjab 2022.

Before the by-polls, PTI and PML-Q had already achieved a combined strength of 173 (163 for PTI and 10 for PML-Q).

With the addition of 15 seats in a recent by-election, the total number of seats now stands at 188, a simple majority of 186 for CM Election. In terms of political standing, the PTI and PML-Q have crossed a significant threshold.

There is a good chance that an independent MPA will join the next government.

The PML-N has 164 members (four new), the PPP has seven, three independents, and a single member of the Pakistan Rah-e-Haq party in its 179-member ruling coalition in the Punjab Assembly.
