Top officials from the electoral commission, police, and the provincial administration met on Friday to discuss security measures and other preparations for the peaceful conduct of the second round of local government elections in the divisions of Karachi and Hyderabad.
At the Sindh Secretariat, the meeting was presided over by Sindh Chief Secretary Dr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput. The meeting was attended by the provincial election commissioner, Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, the home secretary, Saeed Ahmed Mangrejo, the inspector general of police for Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, the administrative secretaries, Akbar Leghari, Khalid Haider Shah, and Hanif Channa, the commissioner for Karachi, Muhammad Iqbal Memon, and the head of the city police, Javed Alam Odho. On July 24, 16 districts in the Karachi and Hyderabad division will hold local government elections.
There are nine districts in Hyderabad division: district Hyderabad, Tando Mohammad Khan, Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Badin, Dadu, Jamshoro, Thatta, and Sujawal. There are seven districts in Karachi division: East, West, South, Central, Malir, Korangi, and Keamari.
9,848 locations for voting
The second round of the local government elections would involve 60,000 workers from the province and federal administrations, according to Sindh Election Commissioner Chauhan.
In 16 districts in Hyderabad and Karachi, there will be 9,848 voting places. Around 20,180 candidates are running in the second round of the local government elections, and 563 of them have been elected without opposition, he continued, adding that 2,573 voting places have been designated as very sensitive.
Mr. Chauhan said that it will never be permitted for the ECP's code of conduct to be broken during the elections.
The commander of the Sindh police announced at the meeting that the police force had created a security plan for the second round of the local government elections, under which 59,881 officers will serve as security guards alongside Rangers.
He further stated that any carelessness in the security procedures would not be allowed.
CCTV at extremely critical voting places
Speaking at the event, the chief secretary gave the go-ahead for all 2,573 very sensitive voting locations to have CCTV cameras installed.
Additionally, he sent orders to the commissioners in charge of Karachi and Hyderabad to make sure that all polling place amenities adhere to Pakistan's Election Commission's rules.
Dr. Rajput stated that any employee found to be missing from election duties will face repercussions.
He gave the general administration secretary instructions to give the ECP the employee information for all departments.
He declared: "Weapons shall not be shown during polls without violating Section 144 [of the Criminal Procedure Code]."
He gave the Hyderabad and Karachi commissioners orders to oversee all arrangements.
The gathering was informed that all involved DCs, SSPs, and election officers had formed a Whatsapp group for the second round of the local government elections, where all information and problems were promptly handled.
